Korkoya Must Quit

By all indications it’s now clear that the Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya is not a Liberian and that he has lied under oath at the Liberian Senate, when after swearing to the Bible during confirmation hearings, said he was a Liberian citizen. Jerome George Korkoya carries two different passports of two different countries-The Republic of Liberia and United States of America (USA). Chairman Korkoya’s U.S. passport, copy of which was obtained by this paper bears the names Jerome George Korkoya, born in Liberia on December 24, 1961. The passport number is 467078002 and it was issued on 16 March 2010 and its expiration date is 17 March 2020.
Korkoya’s Liberian Passport bears the number D001573, with the names Jerome George Korkoya, born in Gbarnga on December 24, 1961. It was issued on May 27, 2013 with expiration date of May26, 2015.
The above information shows that the NEC boss is in possession of a Liberian and United States Passports, clearly in violation of the Liberian Constitution. The Liberia Constitution forbids dual citizenship. That means Cllr. Korkoya lied to members of the Liberian Senate that he is a Liberian citizen. Lying under oath in Liberia is perjury, which is a crime under the laws of Liberia. There are rumors of several of these people holding top public position here. But that remains rumors until there can be evidence to prove.
In the case of Korkoya, the passport in our possession is clear evidence. By taking a United States passport means he has renounced his Liberian nationality, because our laws do accept dual citizenship.
In this case, we call on Cllr. Korkoya to step down for lying under oath or be dismissed by President Sirleaf. It was his free choice, his free will to denounce his Liberian citizenship for that of the United States. Korkoya must now do the most civilized thing -to resign.
